Importance of antioxidants
Grapes, pomegranates and rooibos tea all contain polyphenols, which are a form of antioxidant found in certain foods. Other common antioxidants include Vitamins A, C and E, Beta-carotene and Lycopene.
What are antioxidants?
Antioxidants are substances or nutrients in our foods which can prevent or slow oxidative damage to our body. When our body cells use oxygen, they naturally produce free radicals (by-products) which can cause oxidative damage. This can include heart disease, cardiovascular problems, diabetes, cell and DNA damage and premature ageing. Free radicals are also linked with the development of cancers. Antioxidants act as "free radical scavengers”, interacting with and stabilising them, and hence prevent and repair damage done by these free radicals.
What are good sources of antioxidants?
Common sources of antioxidants include green or orange fruits and vegetables, tomatoes and certain nuts, olive oil and certain grains.
